I would like to continue my commentary on Nāgārjuna’s Fundamental Verses on the Middle Way. As a reminder, you can find the previous posts here: Nāgārjuna.

We are going to start reading chapter 2 of this famous text. It is called: “Examination of Going and Coming.”

Sanskrit

gamyamānasya gamanaṃ kathaṃ nāmopapatsyate |
gamyamānaṃ vigamanaṃ yadā naivopapadyate ||

Chinese (by Kumārajīva)

云何於去時 而當有去法
若離於去法 去時不可得

Tentative translation from the Sanskrit

How indeed can the going of that which is going arise,
when the cessation of going does not at all arise for that which is going?

Tentative translation from the Chinese

How can there be a phenomenon of going at the time of going? If apart from the phenomenon of going, the time of going cannot be obtained.
