Obon お盆 is a Buddhist tradition observed in Japan. The holiday takes place in mid-August, although dates can vary by region. In Kyoto, where I live, it is August 15. The festival is dedicated to honoring the spirits of deceased ancestors.
It is the result of Buddhist elements, indigenous beliefs, and a little bit of Confucianism. However, the actual origins of the festival remain the subject of debate, particularly as to whether or not this event is “Japanese”.
