Interesting interview. AI is a sign of intellectual poverty. Writing, and playing with language, is the ultimate token of human achievement. Why let silicon chips have all the fun?

I use AI to bounce ideas off of, asking questions like; “Review this scene and tell me if it makes sense.” “How is the pacing in this story and what are some things I can do to improve it?” I also use AI as a kind of “reality simulator”, using a custom trained GPT which I wrote about here: https://open.substack.com/pub/kennetheharrell/p/using-ai-as-a-reality-simulator?r=mwvnq&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

For Writers, AI can also be leveraged as a powerful visualization tool or what I call “Using AI Art as Gumbo Starter for the Imagination” for more on that you can read more about it here: https://open.substack.com/pub/kennetheharrell/p/using-ai-art-as-gumbo-starter-for?r=mwvnq&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

I don’t fear AI, instead I choose to use it and there are many instances where oftentimes interactions with large language models can seem like cognition, intuition and intelligence are happening. It is not, all the developers and AI experts tell us this is an illusion, and yes, it is, but my question is if it has utility, does it really matter that it’s an illusion of human like interaction?

Look at it this way, movies are an illusion too, they show us twenty-four still frames per second. Persistence of vision ensures that our brains can stitch those separate frames together, giving us the illusion of movement. We are fully aware it is an illusion, yet people often choose to suspend their disbelief and can become emotionally moved by movies because of the nature of their content. We generally don’t care that what we are really looking at is simply a series of still photographs presented to us in rapid succession.
